Help Wanted by GALEO for Citizenship Drives, Naturalization Ceremonies, DREAM Act Calls
63 Days Until November 2017 Elections; 427 Days Until 2018 Elections
The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) is committed to its mission to increase civic engagement and leadership of the Latino/Hispanic community across Georgia. It needs volunteer help with a great program that helps legal permanent residents become citizens, and to advocate for the voiceless immigrants who need the DREAM Act to protect Latino and immigrant students from deportation. Fluency in Spanish is always helpful, but not necessary.
Citizenship Drives
GALEO’s ongoing citizenship drive workshops happen once a month. It needs immigration lawyers, lawyers and volunteers to help legal permanent residents navigate their workshops and help fill out their application to become U.S citizens. Naturalization allows protection from deportation and ease of travel inside and outside the United States for immigrants and their families. The next workshop is Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Latin American Association on Buford Highway. Sign up to find out about future workshops in metro Atlanta from now until June 2018.
Voter Registration
GALEO also registers new Americans as voters at naturalization ceremonies from 8 to 10 a.m. and 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday in Tucker (2150 Parklake Drive). The organization registers 60-100 people per ceremony so it really needs your help.
Call to Action
The current administration is talking about eliminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals protection for undocumented children. Call your senators and ask them to support the bipartisan DREAM Act so these children will be protected by law and not by executive action alone.
