#159CalltoAction: Help with GALEO Naturalization Ceremonies & Citizenship Drives
130 Days Until November Elections; 494 Days Until 2018 Elections
In our electorate, Georgia’s minorities matter — and Latinos/Hispanics represent some of the fastest growing groups throughout our state. In Congressional District 6, for example, they represented about 12 percent of the population. Engaging them can make a key difference.
The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials (GALEO) is committed to its mission to increase civic engagement and leadership of the Latino/Hispanic community across Georgia. Right now, the org has two amazing programs that help Latinos either become new Americans or help them to register to vote. And, GALEO needs your help. Fluency in Spanish is always helpful, but not necessary.
First, GALEO has a series of Citizenship Drive workshops that happen once a month. It needs immigration lawyers, lawyers and volunteers who will help legal permanent residents navigate the workshops and help fill their application to become U.S citizens. Naturalization allows protection from deportation and ease of travel inside and outside the United States for immigrants and their families.
The next workshop is Saturday, Aug. 5 in Athens. Sign up to find out about future workshops in Metro Atlanta happening through June 2018.
Second, GALEO also registers new Americans at naturalization ceremonies every Wednesday and Friday at 8-10 a.m. or 12:30-2:30 p.m. GALEO registers 60 to 100 people per ceremony so it really needs your help.
If you are interested, email harvey@galeo.org to receive notifications of ongoing ceremonies. Fluency in any language is helpful here, but not necessary.
If you have any more questions, visit www.galeo.org/volunteer or follow GALEO on Facebook or at Galeo.org for future events and advocacy opportunities.
