#159CalltoAction: Help Wanted to Register New Voters with New Georgia Project
138 Days Until November elections. 2017 Elections; 503 Days Until 2018 elections
Voter registration matters — it matters in the municipal elections taking place all across Georgia in 2017, the Midterm Elections in November 2018, and the presidential election in 2020.
Our friends, New Georgia Project, ready to get back to the business of registering voters and we need your help. Please help with upcoming volunteer training and help New Georgia Project continue its goal of registering all of Georgia's new American majority so that we can all have a say in how our state and country are governed: Sign up now>>
Background: Elections like those in Sixth Congressional District are decided by the people — and Georgia's population is not only growing (over 18 percent in the last decade), it's also becoming increasingly diverse. People of color, those 18 to 29 years of age, as well as unmarried women — what we call the "New American Majority" — are a significant part of this growth. Together,
they now make up 62 percent of the voting age population in Georgia.
However, they are only 53 percent of registered voters. It is clear, then, why and how voter registration matters to elections. This is why, in 2014, the New Georgia Project launched an ambitious voter registration program. The program resulted in roughly 69,000 new voters
making the rolls. But there remain about 700,000+ unregistered citizens of color.
Recognizing this fact, NGP's goal is to register all eligible, unregistered citizens of color in Georgia by 2020. So how do we do this? Our research shows that citizens of color register
through voter registration drives at twice the rate of white citizens. These drives are a major part of our efforts — and something for which we could use, in various ways, the help of 159 Georgia Together members and friends.
