Civic Engagement: Ways You Can Help

Civic Engagement:
Ways You Can Help

#1 Way You Can Impact Nov. 6? Registering Voters. "One Person, One Vote" - So Multiply Your Impact. (July 20 Update)

My own “multiply your impact” story: it took me 10+ years after we became US citizens, but in 2016, I finally convinced my mom to register to vote. She’d been hesitant: in the province in the Philippines from where she hails, vote-buying – as in cash-for-votes – routinely occurred when she was growing up. Unfortunately, America in 2016 didn’t really convince her that voting could create positive outcomes. But, I reminded my mom that, while change is slow, and lives will be lost in the interim, it *can* happen, and democratically: she herself saw it firsthand in 1986, when Filipinos accomplished a nonviolent revolution, going from dictatorship to democracy, that ushered in a continuing era of revolutions worldwide. So, my mom has decided to vote again. And if we can convince enough new or low-propensity voters like her by November, Georgia – and America - can be better in 2019.

With that: come volunteer with the organizations below doing critical voter registration – as well as canvassing and voter ID assistance – in July and into August. Courtesy of our friends at Spread the Vote, Let America Vote, Georgia Coalition for the People's Agenda, New Georgia Project, DeKalb and Cobb voter registration volunteers (in partnership with Georgia Equality), Indivisible GA-04, New American Pathways, and ABLE.

(As always, if you can't come out: challenge yourself to check in with at least ONE of your friends, family, co-workers, etc., to VERIFY if they're  registered to vote. If they don't know for sure, help them check their status at: https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do.)
