#159CalltoAction: Seeking Progressive Women to Run for General Assembly
On Behalf Of: Her Term
Her Term is a Georgia-based initiative created to recruit women to run for public office at the local, state and national levels. It takes a data-driven approach to finding qualified and progressive women who the initiative believes can and will win. Working with local and state partners, community leaders and activists, the initiative finds qualified, progressive women already leading in their communities and recruit them to run for office through an in-depth exploration process. Once we have recruited candidates, we continue to work with them to ensure they run successful campaigns.
WHY
You may ask, why do we need to recruit women to run for office here in Georgia. Well, women are severely underrepresented in elected office in Georgia. Georgia ranks 48 out of 50 states for the number of women in elected office. No women hold any of the 13 statewide offices, and all but one of the 16 U.S. representatives are men. No woman has ever been elected to the U.S. Senate or served as governor of Georgia. Women comprise 26 percent of the General Assembly, though they make up roughly 54 percent of the state's population.
