NOTES AND SUMMARY

In the 2016 election, the Democratic challenger Erick Allen came within 7 percent of defeating the incumbent, despite being outspent four to one. Hillary Clinton carried the district by 14 percent. Rich Golick, who has served for 20 years, is not running for re-election.

In 2017, in response to Golick’s narrowing leads, Republicans planned to gerrymander the district, trying to add two predominately white districts and subtract two predominantly African-American districts (House Bill 515). These districts were dropped from the bill early on, even before the bill failed to pass, in 2017.

Erick Allen (D) is a businessman and served as executive director of talent management for the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities. He has run for this office in 2014 and 2016.

Matt Bentley (R) was among the several Republicans who lost to Jen Jordan in state senate 6 special election in 2017.  He’s a 28 year-old attorney who is focused on bringing more young people into the Republican party and “preserving conservative values.”

All statements, answers, and information found within the 159 Georgia Together voter guide were collected via an electronic survey. Due to the sheer volume of information collected and the number of candidates that submitted survey data, all of the information presented in the guide is verbatim per the input from the survey participants (including any spelling or grammatical errors)
