Chris Benton (D)

TOP 3 PRIORITIES IF ELECTED

Raising wages. Universal, cost effective healthcare.  HOPE expansion and reform.  In our district many of our neighbors are hurting.  While the US economy is strong, it isn't working for everyone.  We must have policy that supports working class people and families.

DO YOU SUPPORT LEGISLATION THAT WOULD PREVENT BUSINESS OWNERS AND EMPLOYERS FROM DENYING SERVICES TO LGBTQ PEOPLE AND OTHERS BASED ON THEIR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS?

Yes.  Government sponsored discrimination is morally wrong, and policies that allow it hurt our local economy.

DO YOU SUPPORT ENDING CASH BAIL FOR LOW-LEVEL OFFENSES?

Yes. Cash bail is an example of systemic injustice.  We must move past this idea that wealth alone is the determining factor of someone being released pending trial.

DO YOU SUPPORT THE CREATION OF A NON-PARTISAN INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION?

Yes. Both Democrats and Republicans have been guilty of it in this state.  It's time to ensure fair districts.

WOULD YOU SUPPORT AN ENGLISH-ONLY CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT IF IT WERE ON THE BALLOT?

No.

DO YOU SUPPORT THE RIGHT OF WORKERS TO FORM A UNION AND BARGAIN COLLECTIVELY?

Yes. Unions have been instrumental in raising wages and fighting to improve the lives of working class people

DID YOU/DO YOU SUPPORT GUNS ON CAMPUS?

No. We must do all we can to protect our children.  There is no data to suggest allowing firearms on campus improves their safety.

DO YOU SUPPORT ELECTRICITY RATE INCREASES TO COMPLETE TWO NUCLEAR REACTORS AT PLANT VOGTLE?

No. Plant Voglte needs oversight before any more public funds are committed to it.  The cost overruns, the questionable use of nuclear vs renewable energy generation to replace fossil fuels, and the overall benefit of public investment into Voglte need to be determined.

DO YOU SUPPORT CHANGING GEORGIA'S VOTING SYSTEM TO A VOTER-MARKED (PEN OR PENCIL) PAPER BALLOT WITH OPTICAL SCANNERS?

Yes. I will be supporting to move GA to automatic voter registration and a vote by mail system similar to Oregon.

DO YOU SUPPORT THE EXPANSION OF EARLY VOTING?

Yes. Any policy that makes it easier to vote while not endangering the integrity of our elections I will support.

DO YOU SUPPORT PUBLIC VOUCHERS BEING USED FOR PRIVATE AND/OR CHARTER SCHOOLS?

No. We must not divert any public funds to private schools.  At a time when our public investment in schools is already too low, this is a travesty.

DO YOU SUPPORT MEDICAID EXPANSION OR ANOTHER GEORGIA-SPECIFIC PLAN TO EXTEND HEALTH INSURANCE TO LOW-INCOME GEORGIANS?

Yes. Expanding Medicare is an absolute win for GA.  It will help to keep our rural hospitals solvent, it will bring an estimated 56,000 new jobs to the state, and it will help ensure a healthier workforce and populace.

WILL YOU SUPPORT POLICIES AND LEGISLATION THAT INCREASE ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE, INCLUDING ABORTION, AND OPPOSE POLICIES AND LEGISLATION THAT LIMIT OR REDUCE ACCESS TO REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE, INCLUDING ABORTION?

Yes. Women's reproductive health is a medical issue that should be treated as such without exception.

WOULD YOU SUPPORT EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN SOCIAL SECURITY FOR CURRENT AND FUTURE RETIREES AND PUT THE PROGRAM ON A MORE STABLE FISCAL PATH?

yes. We must ensure that we take care of our elderly so they may live with dignity.

DO YOU SUPPORT A LIVABLE WAGE OF A MINIMUM OF $15 PER HOUR?

Yes. Raising wages is tantamount to moving all our neighbors out of poverty. The first step in raising all wages is moving the minimum wage to a living wage of $15/hr. Not only does this directly benefit our working class, but it provides a huge boost to the economy through spending.
