FOLLOW THE MONEY

In 2016, HD107’s David Casas raised $6,875 total with 22 contributions. All of the monies were from non-individuals; the largest gift of $1,000 was from the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, $650 from Comcast, and $600 from the Community Bankers Association of Georgia.

NOTES AND SUMMARY

Mitt Romney won this district by 8 percent in 2012, but Hillary Clinton won it in 2016 by 11.6 percent.

Republican David Casas has been in office here since 2002. He's been one of the few Hispanic elected officials in state government, and the only one elected as a Republican. His parents were from Cuba, and he was born in Spain. He's been a high school teacher and involved in church ministry. One of the bills he sponsored was an ALEC-written bill that would have reduced oversight for for-profit, corporate colleges (but not for public and not-for-profit private institutions). He's announced that he is not seeking re-election in 2018.

Democratic candidate Shelly Hutchinson is a first-time candidate. She's a clinical social worker and started a small business, Social Empowerment Center, which has created more than a hundred new jobs. She is also an adjunct professor at the University of Georgia. She's been endorsed by Georgia Win List; Her Term Spotlight; Sen. Nikema Williams, Sen. Jen Jordan; Rep. Sheila Clarke Nelson; Rep. Bee Nguyen; Rep. Sam Park; Rep. Spencer Frye; Rep. Deborah Gonzalez; Rep. Renitta Shannon; Rep. Howard Mosby, Rep. Billy Mitchell, Rep. Pedro Marin.
Ken Montano (D) has also filed paperwork to run but has little in the way of social media presence.  He seems to be running on a platform of helping working families.

Janet Mihoci (R) is a paralegal, working for attorney Ken Nugent. She is a strong Trump support and the Gwinnett co-chair of “The President’s Team” which works to support the Trump agenda.

All statements, answers, and information found within the 159 Georgia Together voter guide were collected via an electronic survey. Due to the sheer volume of information collected and the number of candidates that submitted survey data, all of the information presented in the guide is verbatim per the input from the survey participants (including any spelling or grammatical errors).

Shelly Hutchinson (D)
