CANDIDATES

FOLLOW THE MONEY

Joyce Chandler has run in three races, winning all of them.  She has raised a total of $257,843. In 2016, Chandler raised $134,015. Her 2016 Democratic challenger Donna McLeod raised $38,928, including $7,200 from Labor and $7,100 of her own money.

NOTES AND SUMMARY

In 2012 and 2014, Democrats were getting 47-48%. The district was redrawn in 2015 to increase the percentage of white voters but Joyce Chandler only won by 222 votes in 2016, despite also outspending Donna McLeod by more than 3 to 1. Hillary Clinton won this district by 7.3 percent and President Obama carried it in 2012.

A lawsuit was filed in April, 2017 claiming that Georgia illegally gerrymandered two state House districts by moving minority voters out of the districts of two vulnerable white Republican lawmakers: Chandler in District 105 and Brian Strickland in District 111.

The district is becoming increasingly diverse. Grayson High School in 2013-14 was 40 percent white; in March 2017 was 32 percent white.

In February 2018, Rep. Joyce Chandler announced she would not be seeking re-election.

Donna McLeod (D) is active in Gwinnett County Democratic Party, vice chair of Community Outreach and Advocacy. She’s been a grassroots organizer, registering new voters and educating Gwinnett County residents on local, county, state, and federal government processes. She is co-founder of a nonprofit organization that encourages civic responsibility and engagement. McLeod has a degree in chemical engineering from Humber College in Toronto, Canada. She is native Jamaican, reared in Ontario, then became a U.S. citizen. She’s run in this district several times and has been actively campaigning for this race since 2017.

Donna Sheldon (R) used to be representative from District 104 from 2002-2012 and was majority caucus chair. In 2013, she stepped down to run for Congress in the 10th district (she finished third).  She’s a proud member of the NRA, has supported doing away with the IRS and instituting a flat tax.

All statements, answers, and information found within the 159 Georgia Together voter guide were collected via an electronic survey. Due to the sheer volume of information collected and the number of candidates that submitted survey data, all of the information presented in the guide is verbatim per the input from the survey participants (including any spelling or grammatical errors).
