#159CalltoAction: End Gerrymandering in Georgia
Partisan gerrymandering — the practice of drawing legislative district lines to create a partisan advantage — is deadly to our democracy. With computer-assisted programs, lawmakers can strategically choose their voters and create “safe” districts, rigging our elections and making our inalienable right to vote irrelevant. Gerrymandered districts creates extreme partisanship that causes gridlock in government. And lawmakers who are in “safe” districts no longer have to be accountable to their constituents.
159 Georgia Together is joining Indivisible, Common Cause, ProGeorgia and other groups to end gerrymandering in Georgia by supporting legislation that would reform our redistricting process. This legislation, introduced both in the Georgia House and Senate in 2017, transfers the responsibility of redistricting from the Georgia legislature to a nonpartisan independent commission.
NOTE: If you are in GA Senate Districts 1, 3, 6, 15, 16, 28, 38, 39, 41, 46 or 48, we especially need your help! Your Senator is on the Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee. To find out your senate district, go to https://www.mvp.sos.ga.gov/MVP/mvp.do.
